In a medium mostly about surface treatments, a series that respects its plot and characters like "I Hear Your Voice" did is rare. When the actress was cast in "God's Gift - 14 Days" , a series about a mother's fight to save her daughter, many fans saw another brilliant series in the making. Sadly, this industry's risk aversion, adoration of the male element and flawed filming system turned what could have been a masterpiece in its medium into just another entertaining, but not top quality series. AdvertisementWhen a little girl named Saet-byeol Kim Yoo-bin-I is kidnapped and later found drowned in a lake, her mother, Kim Soo-hyeon Lee Bo-young decides to take her own life. As she jumps into the same lake, a man named Gi Dong-chan Cho Seung-woo is also being thrown in it by a group of thugs. When they come out, they realize they have traveled 14 days into the past. Remembering a mysterious woman who spoke to her about this happening, Soo-hyeon finds Dong-chan and together they try to stop the events that lead to Saet-byeol's death, as well as discover how they are both connected to the big picture that starts forming. The first thing to say about "God's Gift - 14 Days" is that it is not a bad series. It is not great, but it is definitely not something bad for drama standards. It has some great acting, the mystery is kept alive until the very end although the supernatural part is never addressed, its pace does not slow to the point it becomes boring and its production quality is quite nice and atmosphere appropriate for its genre. There are some interesting characters, different types of relationship dynamics explored and it is generally a very busy and entertaining show, if killing some time is what one wants to achieve. However, the series fails in some ways in its two most important elements. The mystery and how it presents it to the viewer and most importantly, by losing sight of its premise and original element of appeal. The thing about mysteries is that they need to be airtight. They need to present just enough to the viewer for them to stand a chance at making legitimate guesses. When a mystery is solved, the viewer should be able to piece it all together and when they go back, they should realize they already had everything they needed to figure it out. The series stumbles in the sense that the writer seemed to be creating some things as they went along, even changing things already established, just to serve their new plans. This is evident very early on, when a scene that was presented with a seemingly insignificant character played by an extra earlier in the series is changed to serve the developments. During later episodes, the creators re-film this scene and replace the actor there with one of the main actors and his character, to reveal the person we had seen in that process was in fact this character we have known. This is cheating viewers out of their chances, but also shows the creator has no idea what they are doing further down the road. It is very likely the series is filled with such issues, some obvious the first time around, some probably to be discovered for anyone who watches it again. But this drama's worst betrayal of its own premise and fans is how it handled its female lead and her story. What started as a series based on 'The Story of a Mother', featuring a strong woman out to save her child soon started to shift. By the end, slowly, painfully, it had been turned into a worship of the male lead, even going as far as to show him altering the original tale to make it about a Knight fighting to save the little girl. In perhaps an allegorical twist, this just showed the overall intentions of the production. The female character went from being the one that mattered and moved the plot to a plus one. She turned into the typical reckless and hysterical woman who had to be stopped, brought to her senses and constantly saved by the male lead whose own story took the wheel. She was not only used as a punching bag, getting kidnapped, beaten and generally abused by men just to become a damsel for the hero to save, but she was eventually pushed aside. What started as female lead centric proceeded as a work with two leads and eventually became male lead centric. The same thing happened with her daughter, whose fate ended up being just another piece of the big picture in the male lead's world. Her life turned into just another plot device. It is basically striking women down for daring to be the heroines in their own stories. And this shows another big problem of this industry and its live filming system. Give audiences what they demand, even if it means not staying true to your work and messing up its coherence. The ending of the series also has a lot of people angry, which is perfectly understandable. Rushed, unfinished and with conflicting characterization, the ending was simply a culmination of the downfall this series brought upon itself. As mentioned earlier, there are many parts of "God's Gift - 14 Days" that are entertaining and it is by far not the worst thing out there. But a series which fails at the two things it was supposed to do well and which started as something with all the elements it needed to become exceptional, but ended in a half-baked attempt at what it originally tried to do is a frustrating sight. Sadly, it is also not a surprising one in this medium. Written by Orion from 'Orion's Ramblings' Follow OrionsRamblings God’s Gift 14 Days is a suspense drama about a woman Lee Bo Young whose daughter is kidnapped and murdered, but she gets the opportunity to go back in time and try to prevent her daughter’s death with the help of a detective Jo Seung Woo. God’s Gift 14 Days is one of those dramas that has been on my watch list pretty much since it came out, but I just never made it around to watching it. Well, I finally did, but sadly, the drama was a big disappointment. So let’s get into it. Lee Bo Young plays Kim Soo Hyun who works for a crime solving TV show. Her life is turned upside down when her daughter is kidnapped and ultimately murdered. But when she gets the chance to relive the time leading up to that, she desperately works to save her. Jo Seung Woo is Ki Dong Chan who is a has-been detective that finds himself mixed up with Soo Hyun and her daughter. He’s a lively character who is very rough around the edges, but he has a good heart and carries around some trauma. So why didn’t God’s Gift 14 Days work for me? First, I just plain struggled to get into this drama from start to finish. I’ve seen it described as being very suspenseful repeatedly, but it didn’t feel very intense to me. It should have since the stakes are quite high and there is plenty of action, but it just didn’t. I got more bored as it went along despite the thickening story and a whole lot going on. This was also a rare case for me where the story felt very forced. There are so many convenient plot devices used one right after the other. It really was too much and made everything feel so unnatural. And the police work and logic was pretty awful too. The characters in this drama also make some very illogical choices, and quite a few of them at that. Soo Hyun certainly made her fair share of bad decisions. I found Soo Hyun’s husband Ji Hoo Kim Tae Woo to be a difficult character as he does some very questionable things that just didn’t make sense, especially if he even remotely cared for his wife. I know he was meant to cause additional conflict, but he was too much. On the plus side, the drama is plotted pretty well with new things always going on. There is actually a pretty elaborate mystery in place with a lot of layers of the story to peel back. This does allow for some twists and big reveals. It’s like the concept of the story is good, but much of the details and how it unfolds is what is not so great. I thought the way the story was laid out was a tad confusing and certain story elements weren’t adequately explained. There were many times that I wondered why things happened and was kind of left in the dark. Just enough was explained to get the gist of things, but the full explanation remained cloudy. Then everything just gets so complicated and crazy that I found it all to be pretty ridiculous. Now all of the actors were wonderful in the drama. Everyone is cast well, and they go all in for their characters. Lee Bo Young was particularly good as our leading lady. I could really feel her desperation to save her daughter. Jo Seung Woo was also very enjoyable with his lively character that added a bit of levity in the beginning and then progressed to being quite intense in the latter part. Jo Seung Woo and Lee Bo Young also made a pretty good team and worked well together. Then there’s the central relationship of a mother and her daughter. It’s a relationship that starts out quite strained, but then losing Saet Byul Kim Yoo Bin opens Soo Hyun’s eyes to what’s important. And Soo Hyun will do anything to save Saet Byul. Her love for her daughter is very moving. Although I do have to mention that this child has a bad a habit of getting herself in dangerous situations and really doesn’t make it easy to avoid getting kidnapped. She’s a sweet kid, but she sure doesn’t listen, breaks the rules, sneaks out, and cries a whole lot. It certainly makes the bad guy’s job easier and mom’s job a lot harder. So aside from this drama being known as a suspenseful and thrilling tale, the other big thing it is known for is its ending. Without spoiling it, for those who don’t like somewhat open and rushed endings, this drama will be a big disappointment. I’ve heard about that from fans many times over the years and it is understandable considering how much build up there is for the ending. Since I wasn’t really feeling the drama, I was actually kind of hoping it would just go all out be completely crazy and terrible after all that discontent from fans. But I was disappointed again, lol. Like I said, it’s rushed, left open, and doesn’t explain things well. But I mostly felt neutral towards it. I can see why others would be far more disappointed than me though, especially if you were enjoying the drama. As you can see, I had quite a few issues with God’s Gift 14 Days. It’s disappointing since I was expecting a pretty high quality thriller and instead got an overly complicated, messy, and un-engaging drama. But there are a whole lot of people who loved this drama and enjoyed it for the most part. So maybe give it a go, but watch out for that ending! My Rating 5/10 Read more Kdrama Reviews. A few years ago, I thought Korean drama God's Gift 14 Days was quite nice a story; it was suspenseful, you'll be rooting for the mother as she scrambles to undo her daughter's death, that kind of stuff. Then I came across this review by ockoala and I totally agree that the ending is very unsatisfying. I would say the drama is not bad for its story and suspense but the ending could and should have been better. You can read it here korean 🇰🇷it's been so long but i still remember i cried in class over that one scene where lee boyoung cries for her daughter to be back it hurts so bad and she's soooo good
